§ 87. Mr. Emrys Hughesasked the Secretary of State for War if he authorised the speech of Field-Marshal Lord Montgomery, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, made at Glasgow on 30th October in which a scheme of permanent conscription was advocated.
§ Mr. M. StewartNo, my right hon. Friend has seen a report of this speech in which Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery pointed out the value of the reserve of trained men in the nation, expected to result in coming years from the National Service Act passed by this House last Session. The speech did not deal with the duration of the National Service Scheme, which is a matter for His Majesty's Government and the Parliament of the day.
