§ 90. Mr. Prittasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why Asiatic employees of the Singapore and Malaya Governments who remained in those Colonies during the Japanese occupation are receiving only nine months' back pay to cover the period of the occupation, three months of which pay is set off against the rehabilitation grant received by all Government employees and four further months of which is to be paid only on retirement, whilst European employees in similar circumstances receive three-and-a-half years' pay in full in cash.
Mr. Creech JonesNo final decision on the subject has been reached. The present position is that the Governments of Singapore and the Malayan Union are doing their utmost to arrive at a satisfactory settlement of this most difficult question, in negotiation with the Service associations concerned.
