§ 84. Mr. Harold Daviesasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what percentage of the children of school-going age in the Seychelles attend school; how many teachers are employed in Government primary schools; with what qualifications and salaries; and whether he is aware that secondary school fees have recently been increased.
Mr. Creech JonesIt is estimated that 51 per cent. of children between the ages of six and 15 were attending school in Seychelles at the end of last year. Eight teachers are employed under Government on primary education. One is a Froebel trained woman education officer on the salary scale £354 rising to £500; four are locally certificated teachers on the initial salary of £51 in the scale for certificated teachers; and the remainder, who are uncertificated, are paid at the rate of £39 a year. There has been a small increase in school fees at the boys' secondary school to cover the cost of various items such as stationery and games, which were previously charged as extras.
