HC Deb 21 November 1946 vol 430 cc148-9W
53. Mr. Assheton

asked the Minister of Labour by how many points the cost-of living index would rise if the present food subsidies were withdrawn.

Mr. Isaacs

If all the food subsidies had been removed, and if retail prices had risen by amounts equivalent to the subsidies, it is estimated that the index for 1st November would have shown a rise of about 55 instead of 31 per cent. since September, 1939.
