§ 109. Mr. Yorkasked the Minister of Food why the imports of maize during January, February and March, 1946, are less than one-quarter of the imports received in January, February and March, 1945.
§ Dr. Summerskill:In the first quarter of 1945, out of a total import of approximately 150,000 tons of maize into the United Kingdom, about 50,000 tons were obtained from the U.S.A. In the first quarter of 1946, no U.S.A. maize was available, and United Kingdom imports had to be drawn wholly from the Argentine. That country had a poor maize crop in 1945, and the United Kingdom was unable to import more than approximately 43,000 tons from this source during the first quarter of 1946.
