§ 5. Mr. T. Reidasked the Minister of Works how many bricks, approximately, were made each month in August or September, 1945; what is the present output of bricks per month; and if future output is likely to meet the enormous demand created by the building programme.
§ Mr. TomlinsonBrick production in August, 1945, was 88,000,000 and in September, 1945, 102,000,000. Output in April, 1946, was 200,000,000. I hope the steps that are being taken to increase the labour strength of the industry, and to extend its capacity, will have the effect of raising production to the level of future requirements. In the meantime it is necessary to observe a strict economy in the use of bricks in the interests of the house-building campaign.
