HC Deb 02 December 1946 vol 431 c8W
55. Mr. Dodds-Parker

asked the Under secretary of State for Dominion Affairs what action he is taking to increase the output of newsprint from Newfoundland.

Mr. M. Stewart

I have been asked to reply. The Newfoundland pulp and paper industry is in the hands of two companies. In the fiscal year 1939/40 their combined exports of newsprint totalled 346,000 tons. During the war, various factors, including high freight and delivery costs and labour shortages in the woods led to a reduction in exports. The present world demand for newsprint is, however, absorbing the total production capacity of the Newfoundland mills.
