Mr. Lambert

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many persons are employed by His Majesty's and local governments as civil servants or in any other capacity; and the total annual cost to the Exchequer and local authorities.

Mr. Dalton:

I would refer the hon. Member to the Monthly Digest of Statistics for February, Tables 4 and 22, and to the latest statement of civil staffs employed in Government Departments (Cmd. 6763). Estimates of the annual cost of Central Government staffs during 1946–47 are now being published; but no corresponding figures are available for the cost to local authorities of their staffs.
