HC Deb 02 April 1946 vol 421 c160W
108. Mr. Willis

asked the Minister of Works the brick production for Scotland for each of the last three months.

Mr. Tomlinson:

The figures of brick production for Scotland are as follows:

December, 1945 16,154,000
January, 1946 15,897,000
February, 1946 19,120,000

Mr. D. J. Williams

asked the Minister of Works how many brickworks are now in production in Wales; and how many men and women, respectively, are employed in them.

Mr. Tomlinson:

There are 31 brickworks at present in production in Wales and 1,132 men and 19 women operatives were employed in these works at the 28th February.

Mr. D. J. Williams

asked the Minister of Works how many brickworks in Wales are undermanned; what is the estimated number of men and women, respectively. needed to obtain full production in these undertakings; and what steps he is taking to recruit the necessary labour.

Mr. Tomlinson:

62 out of a total of 74 brickworks in Wales have so far not attained their prewar labour force and it is estimated that 1,340 operatives of all types are required to obtain full production. Every effort is being made to recruit the labour required by means of Class B release from the Forces and by the employment of prisoner-of-war labour where British labour is not available. In addition, arrangements for training new entrants in brickworks are at an advanced stage of discussion with the industry. The number of women likely to be employed it the future is not known.
