HC Deb 09 October 1945 vol 414 cc107-8W
Colonel Erroll

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to check the increasing number of motor-car thefts which are taking place in different parts of the country.

Mr. Ede

It is the case that the increase in the number of motor-cars on the road has been reflected in an increase in the number of cars stolen or taken and driven away without the owners' consent. I have no doubt that the police are fully alive to the position, and that they are doing everything they can, within their available resources, to deal with the problem, and I see no reason for issuing any special directions. I hope, however, that this Question and answer may serve to remind drivers of motor-cars that they can themselves help to keep down the number of such offences by locking their cars when leaving them unattended.
