HC Deb 11 December 1945 vol 417 cc371-2W
Mr. J. Hudson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if it is still the policy of his Department to ban the use by German prisoners of war of Miss Ruth Fry's books, the. "Quaker Adventure" and the accounts of her visits to Russia; and whether he will now permit these books to be sent to the prisoners.

Mr. McNeil

These books were carefully examined when they were received last May, at which time it was felt that certain passages taken apart from their context might be misused for their own ends by Nazi elements in the prisoner of war camps. I take the view, however, that the restrictions on literature available to prisoners should be progressively, relaxed as their re-education proceeds, and I am now prepared to authorise the issue of the books referred to.
