HC Deb 13 October 1943 vol 392 cc896-7W
Mr. Naylor

asked the Minister of Supply whether he is aware that certain Sunday newspapers are still running cross-word competitions in which the competitors are encouraged to purchase more than one copy of the newspaper with a view to multiplying their efforts by means of the extra coupons obtained in that way; and whether, in view of the urgent necessity for economy in the use of paper, he will approach the Newspaper Proprietors Association and the Newspaper Society with a view to such competitions being confined to single issues of the publication, thus making effective a proportionate reduction in the quota of paper ultimately allowed to such newspapers?

Mr. Peat

I am not aware that any of the Sunday papers have encouraged competitors to buy more than one copy, but in some cases the published conditions did not make it entirely clear that where additional entries were permitted they might be on plain paper. This has now been corrected.
