HC Deb 11 November 1943 vol 393 cc1304-5W
Mr. A. Edwards

asked the Minister of Health how many cases of diphtheria were notified in 1923 and 1942; how many deaths from diphtheria were registered in those two years; and what was the death rate from diphtheria per 1,000,000 living under 15 years of age in those two years?

Mr. E. Brown

The information for which my hon. Friend asks is as follows:

as an adequate diagnosis for admission of such cases to its hospitals; whether the suggestion that it will be simple to arrange with the Registrar-General for regular revision of notifications based on the final diagnosis has been approved by his Department; whether he is aware that the error in diagnosis in diphtheria in London is about 35 per cent.; and what method will be adopted to ensure fair comparison of the statistics after revision of notifications with the records of former years?

Mr. Brown

I am looking into the matters to which my hon. Friend refers, and will communicate with him as soon as possible.
