HC Deb 04 February 1943 vol 386 c1073W
Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will make a statement on the use to which the Department of Agriculture for Scotland proposes to put the estate in Glen Etive, donated by Lieut.-Colonel Anderson as a demonstration farming centre?

Mr. Johnston

I am glad to have this opportunity of thanking Colonel Anderson for his public-spirited gift. Our immediate aim at Glen Etive will be to build up a stock of hardy breeding sheep and cattle, to break in cultivable low ground for the provision of crops for the maintenance of the stock in winter, and gradually to improve the condition of the hill pastures. The results should afford a valuable demonstration of the agricultural possibilities of Highland deer forest land.
