HC Deb 07 December 1943 vol 395 cc792-3W
Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many Africans in West Africa are at present under detention without charge or trial; and, in particular, whether the cases of M. A. O. Imondu and Wallace Johnson have recently been reviewed?

Colonel Stanley

I am asking the Governors of the West African Colonies to supply me with an up-to-date return of all Africans at present being detained or subjected to restrictions under the local Defence Regulations as the information in my possession does not differentiate between Africans and persons of other race. As regards the second part of the Question, the hon. Member is no doubt aware that Mr. Imondu and Mr. Wallace Johnson are no longer under detention but were released under Restriction Orders some time ago. I have no doubt that the Governors of Nigeria and Sierra Leone respectively will reconsider these cases when circumstances justify their doing so.
