HC Deb 04 August 1943 vol 391 cc2310-1W
Major Lyons

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what sums are being devoted to the education of Africans in Kenya and Uganda, respectively, for the current year; what this amounts to per capita of the estimated African populations in those territories; and how each compares with the previous year?

Colonel Stanley

The provision for African education in the estimates of Kenya and Uganda for 1943 and 1942 is approximately as follows:

1942
Amount Rate per head.
£ Shillings
Kenya 86,600 .50
Uganda 124,000 .66
1943
Kenya 88,660 .51
Uganda 125,000 .07

These figures include a proportion of the general administrative expenses of the Education Departments, but do not include the substantial contributions towards the cost of education which are made by the native administrations and Local Native Authorities, precise figures of which are nod available. In addition considerable sums are expended from private sources, particularly those of the Missionary Societies.
