HC Deb 14 April 1943 vol 388 cc1221-2W
Mr. Martin

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether any stocks are now being accumulated for the relief of famine in Europe as the Continent is released from enemy occupation; whether it is proposed to set up any pooling authority for this purpose and any distributive authority; and, if so, of what nature?

Mr. Johnstone

Certain stocks of foodstuffs (principally wheat) are already available and the possibility of accumulating further stocks of foodstuffs, and also medical supplies and clothing, is under active consideration. The question of the appropriate organisation for holding and distributing relief stocks is a matter which concerns all the United Nations, and His Majesty's Government are in consultation with the United States Government and other United Nations on this subject.
