HC Deb 08 September 1942 vol 383 cc67-8W
Mr. D. Adams

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport, whether he will consider the desirability of eliminating traffic lights at simple I crossings, in view of the waste of time they cause without contributing to safety?

Mr. Noel-Baker

Local authorities are now carrying out a further review of traffic light signals at I junctions and others, in order to discontinue those which are no longer justified on traffic or safety grounds. The estimates so far received indicate that approximately 18 per cent. of the total number have been, or will be, altogether discontinued and that in addition, about 48 per cent. are being, or will be, worked for a reduced number of hours.
