HC Deb 01 October 1942 vol 383 c945W
Mr. Reakes

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is prepared to enforce the return to this country of men and women who have fled overseas during the present war and compel them to play their part in the present emergency and thereby relieve pressure upon women called to the Services, munitions and Civil Defence duties?

Mr. Bevin

The National Service (Foreign Countries) Act, which became law on 6th August last, enables conscription to be applied by Order in Council to British subjects in any foreign country specified in the Order, and an Order in Council has been made applying the Act to Egypt. The question of applying the Act to British subjects in countries other than Egypt is under consideration. Male British subjects of military age in the United States are liable for service with the United States Forces unless they volunteer for service with the British Forces.
