§ Mr. R. Morganasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that, in spite of the shortage of teachers at the present time, members of the teaching profession are being ordered to take up work as agricultural labourers; and whether he will avoid the use of men with high educational qualifications, who are needed in their own sphere, on work of this kind?
§ Mr. BevinI am aware that some teachers have been registered as conscientious objectors on conditions that they undertake land work; these decisions have been given by the statutory tribunals and I have no power to intervene. A few teachers were also included in a batch of men accepted for service in the R.A.F. who were directed to undertake some urgent land work for a few weeks until they were due to be taken into training; they have now all been called up.
