HC Deb 10 March 1942 vol 378 c934W
Sir R. Clarry

asked the President of the Board of Education whether compulsory retirement of teachers at the age of 60 is strictly enforced by the education authorities throughout Monmouthshire; and whether he will consider the desirability, under existing war conditions, of suspending this rule?

Mr. Butler

I understand that rules requiring the retirement of teachers on reaching the age of 60 are no longer strictly enforced in any part of Monmouthshire. I think it most desirable, owing to the growing shortage of teachers, that such rules should be suspended, under existing war conditions, in the few areas in which I understand they are still in operation.
