HC Deb 21 January 1942 vol 377 cc361-2W
Lieutenant Butcher

asked the President of the Board of Education what steps he has taken to ensure that the recognised youth organisations have adequate trained personnel and suitable premises to deal with the young people who are being directed into them under the National Service Act?

Mr. Ede

Arrangements are in hand to safeguard existing personnel, both men and women, employed full-time on Youth Service work, whether by local education authorities or by voluntary organisations. At the same time the authorities and the voluntary organisations are being encouraged and aided by my Department to expand their training course activities and further short courses are being arranged by the Board. The question of premises is in present circumstances one of great difficulty. Existing buildings will no doubt be used to the full, and my right hon. Friend is glad to say that the Army authorities have been sympathetic over the release of requisitioned premises, a number of which have been restored to civil user. My right hon. Friend hopes further to be able to meet a number of urgent cases through the provision of prefabricated huts, a supply of which is being allocated for the purpose.
