§ Mr. Viantasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will give details of the cases notified as smallpox at Edinburgh; the age, sex, dates of vaccination or revaccination; date of appearance of smallpox rash; date of death or discharge from hospital; source of infection, if known; and the reason why smallpox cases were allowed in the institution from which the majority of the cases came?
Mr. JohnstonI regret that there has not been time before the Recess to prepare a statement of the particulars for which the hon. Member asks, but I will send him such a statement as soon as possible. As regards the last part of the Question, the institution referred to does not admit persons suffering from infectious diseases; the patients who were found to be suffering from smallpox, or suspected smallpox, while in the institution had been admitted for other (non-infectious) conditions.
