HC Deb 06 August 1942 vol 382 cc1227-8W
Mr. Mathers

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport, whether he is aware of the hardship imposed upon many service men stationed in Scotland through the restrictions imposed upon rail travel because of the English bank holiday; and whether he will ensure that in future service men are not so restricted because of this holiday which does not apply to Scottish industrial concerns?

Mr. Noel-Baker

While it is true that Angust Bank Holiday is not observed in Scotland, it affected travel across the Border and it was not thought desirable to differentiate between units stationed in England and Scotland respectively in regard to the restrictions on travel during that period. Perhaps I may add that these restrictions were imposed in consultation and agreement with the Service Departments.
