HC Deb 21 February 1940 vol 357 c1377W
Sir R. Gower

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that many officers on the retired list of the Royal Navy who have been recalled for service during the present war were not, prior to recall, in receipt of any retired pay; and for what reason such officers receive substantially more pay than officers of the emergency list of similar seniority who have equally been recalled?

Mr. Shakespeare

Officers on the retired list who were not in receipt of retired pay prior to recall and who have been recalled for service during the present war receive the same rate of pay as officers on the emergency list of similar seniority. My hon. Friend must have in mind officers who were re-employed voluntarily before any question of recall arose and who are still serving on their pre-war contract which provided for the payment of a bonus of 15 per cent. in addition to full pay.
