HC Deb 30 November 1939 vol 355 cc282-3W
Mr. Mitchell

asked the Minister of Transport whether notwithstanding the great difficulties under which the railways are at present working, he will endeavour to improve the speed of passenger services between London and Scotland, and important industrial centres, respectively?

Captain Wallace

I am glad to inform my hon. Friend that arrangements have been made to introduce, as from Monday, 4th December, accelerated passenger services and to augment the number of long distance express trains between London, important provincial centres in the Midlands and the North and Scotland. There will be a reduction in the journey time between London and Edinburgh of nearly 1 ¼ hours, and proportionate reductions between other towns; there will also be mid-day services between Glasgow, Edinburgh and London, and a day service between London and Aberdeen.

Improvements will be made in Sunday as well as week-day services.
