§ Colonel Baldwin-Webbasked the Minister of Supply whether he will institute a comprehensive independent inquiry into the vast consumption of timber by all the Departments of the State, for, among other purposes, camps for serving soldiers, civil servants, evacuated children, new factories, huts for public school boys, and for new emergency air-raid precautions structures, with the object of lessening the use of a commodity of which there is urgent need and also saving much ship space which can be better employed?
§ Colonel LlewellinThe utilisation of timber by all Government Departments is already strictly controlled in accordance with decisions given by the Joint Production and Materials Sub-Committee and the Works and Building Priority Sub-Committee of the Ministerial Priority Committee. Both these sub-committees are fully aware of the urgent necessity of restricting the use of timber, and my right hon. Friend sees no necessity for any further inquiry. A branch of the Timber Control is specially engaged in promoting economy in the use of timber.
