HC Deb 02 November 1939 vol 352 c2134W
Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the Minister of Supply whether he is aware that there are a number of tinplate and steel-sheet works in West Wales lying idle; and, as similar buildings and plant were adapted for munition purposes during 1914–18, whether he will consider the utilisation of these plants during the present emergency particularly as there are large numbers of unemployed in the area?

Mr. Burgin

My information is that most of the tinplate and steel-sheet plant which can be economically employed is at work and that it is unlikely that any of the works now idle would lend themselves to adaptation for munitions purposes. If, however, the hon. Member will send me details of any factories which might be suitable for my purposes, I should be glad to have inquiries made.
