§ Mr. BernaysThe total net expenditure on poor relief in England and Wales for the year ended 31st March, 1931, was £35,572,355. For the year ended 31st March, 1938, it is estimated to have been approximately £38,175,000. The net expenditure per head of the population is estimated as 6s. 4¾d. in 1913–14 and 18s. 7¼d. in 1937–38.
