§ Mr. Rileyasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has any information as to any approach having been made to the Government of Cuba for the 200,000 tons of surplus sugar in Cuba; and, if not, can he arrange to have the matter brought before the International Sugar Council?
Captain A. Evansasked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the fact that quotas approved by the International Sugar Council are insufficient for the present requirements of the market, he can state what is the present approximate tonnage of raw sugar available in the Empire and foreign countries, respectively, for immediate release; what steps have been taken to accelerate the 709W despatch of raw sugar from Empire countries; and whether, in view of the refusal of Cuba to release additional supplies, despite a large surplus and of the unsatisfactory working of the International Sugar Agreement, he will arrange for the Government representatives on the Sugar Council to advocate amendments to the agreement to meet the situation when the Council meets in London this week?
§ Mr. StanleyAs the House has already been informed, the executive committee of the International Sugar Council, on which His Majesty's Government is represented, is meeting in London this week to consider the situation. It is clearly necessary to await the results of this meeting before considering what, if any, further action is required.
