HC Deb 09 February 1939 vol 343 cc1138-9W
Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

asked the Prime Minister whether he will instruct His Majesty's Ambassador in Rome to call the attention of the Italian Government to the fact that the retention of Italian troops in Spain until the victory of General Franco is complete politically as well as military would directly contravene the terms of the Anglo-Italian Agreement?

Mr. Butler

If the hon. and gallant Member is referring to an article which appeared in the Italian Press on 5th February, His Majesty's Ambassador in Rome has already been informed by the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs that the article was not inspired by the Italian Government and merely expressed the personal views of the writer.

Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

asked the Prime Minister whether, during the Rome conversations, the head of the Italian Government defined the objectives which had led to Italian intervention in Spain?

The Prime Minister

No, Sir.
