HC Deb 20 April 1939 vol 346 c528W
Mr. Turton

asked the Minister of Agritulture how many persons are engaged in agriculture as tractor drivers; and how many are above the age of 25?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

I regret that information is not available regarding the numbers of persons engaged as tractor drivers in agriculture but an inquiry carried out in September, 1937, indicated that there were at that time about 43,000 tractors on farms in England and Wales. It is reasonable to infer, therefore, that there were then at least that number of persons on farms who devoted some part of their time to driving tractors, but no information is available to indicate what proportion might be above 25 years of age.
