asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education what percentage of the elementary schools in England and Wales are provided and non-provided, respectively; and what is the total number of children in each system?

Mr. Lindsay

On 31st March, 1938, 49.6 per cent. of the public elementary schools maintained by local education authorities in England and Wales were council schools and 50.4 per cent. were voluntary schools. The numbers of pupils on the registers of council and

statutory functions of Area Committees. These functions also include the important duties of surveying the character and extent of the existing facilities within their areas and of directing public interest to the value of physical training and recreation and encouraging the promotion of extended and improved facilities.

Following is the statement

voluntary schools were 3,512,882 and 1,522,624 respectively.
