asked the Minister of Labour the total number of registered unemployed in Great Britain, and the total amount paid in benefit, for the years ended September, 1930 and 1937, respectively?

In the 12 months ended September, 1930, the average number of persons on the registers of Employment Exchanges in Great Britain was 1,657,000 and in the 12 months ended September, 1937, it was 1,514,000. The total expenditure on unemployment benefit (including transitional benefit) in the 12 months ended September, 1930, was about £65,000,000. In the 12 months ended September, 1937, expenditure on unemployment benefit and unemployment allowances was about £69,000,000.
