§ Mr. Ellis Smithasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether consideration has been given to pages 34 to 40 of the Report by the Council for Art and Industry on Design and the Designer in Industry, and the Report of the Pottery Committee of the Council for Art and Industry, which was submitted to the President of the Board in April, 1937; if so, what is to be the policy of the Board with reference to these reports; and what steps have been taken or are contemplated to carry it out?
Mr. LindsayThe Board are in general agreement with the findings of that section of the Report on Design and the Designer in Industry to which the hon. Member refers. As is made clear in the report, however, such developments as are recommended depend very largely upon the active co-operation of industry and they are, therefore, a matter for consideration in the first instance by local industrialists and the local education authorities concerned. The question of the provision to be made at Stoke-on-Trent for the training of designers and craftsmen for the pottery industry, which was the subject of the Pottery Committee's Report, is to be discussed at an early date at a conference of representatives of the industry and of the local education authorities with officers of the Board of Education.
