Mr. T. Morrisasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any steps have been taken following the conclusion of the International Sugar Agreement to ensure that the efficiency of the West Indian sugar production is improved, so as to replace it on a more satisfactory competitive basis with other tropical sugarprothcing areas?
§ Mr. Ormsby-GoreNo, Sir. The increase of efficiency in agricultural production in the Colonial Empire is one of the1794W constant objectives of His Majesty's Government and all Colonial Governments. Action has already been taken to establish and encourage research work for the West Indian sugar industry and considerable improvements in production have already resulted from the scientific work which has been undertaken. This research and investigational work will be continued and I do not consider that the conclusion of the International Sugar Agreement need be regarded as affecting the situation.
