HC Deb 10 November 1937 vol 328 c1794W
Captain P. Macdonald

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been called to the demand in Kenya for a large-scale development of roads to assist in the further development of the Colony and to encourage tourist traffic; and whether any steps are being taken to evolve an adequate road programme for Kenya during the next few years?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

I have not heard of any recent demand, but I am well aware that the improvement and extension of its roads has been engaging the attention of the Colonial Government within the scope of its financial resources. £58,680 is provided in the Estimates for this year for maintenance of roads and bridges though only £I,000 could be allotted for new construction. In addition, the Colonial Development Fund has come to the Colony's assistance by providing £99,000 on loan at favourable terms for the construction of certain roads required for development purposes. Any further extensions must depend upon the funds which can be made available.
