HC Deb 13 November 1936 vol 317 c1216W
Mr. HOPKIN

asked the Minister of Health what quantity of tinned mutton was used at the Mental Hospital, Carmarthen, last year and this year up to 31st October, respectively; and whether he will advise the use of fresh meat obtainable locally in preference to tinned meat?

Sir K. WOOD

The quantity of tinned mutton used at the Carmarthen Mental Hospital in the last financial year was 1,482 lbs. for over 750 patients, and for the seven months ended 31st October in the present year, 1,308 lbs. for about 767 patients. Corned mutton is supplied for dinner once a month (and corned beef also once a month) to afford variety, because the patients are understood to like occasional changes from fresh meat. The latter is obtained from local butchers or the hospital farm. I am not satisfied that the present limited use of tinned meat need be discontinued.
