HC Deb 21 May 1936 vol 312 c1388W
Mr. LEWIS

asked the President of the Board of Education when the experiment was last tried of making a charge for admission to the Victoria and Albert Museum; for how long the experiment lasted; the amount charged for admission; and the days on which this charge was made?

Mr. STANLEY

From the opening of the museum in 1852 until the 30th June, 1914, charges for admission were regularly made to visitors other than students on three days a week. The normal charge was 6d. a visit, but period tickets were also available at reduced rates. From 1908 to 1914 the days on which fees were charged were Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Mr. LEWIS

asked the President of the Board of Education what additional cost would be involved by keeping the Victoria and Albert Museum open until 8 p.m. on three week-days in each week?

Mr. STANLEY

It is estimated that the additional annual cost involved by keeping the Victoria and Albert Museum open until 8 p.m. on three week-days in each week is approximately £1,500. This figure includes an estimate of some £150 for charges such as lighting and heating, which would fall upon the Vote of the Office of Works.
