Mr. Masonasked the Secretary of State for Employment whether the review undertaken by the Health and Safety Commission's advisory committee on toxic substances especially in regard to the carcinogenicity of chrysoidine dye, is still in progress; and whether data is still being collected to determine whether there is a carcinogenitic effect in its continued use.

Mr. GummerThe advisory committee's review has been completed. As I said in my reply to the right hon. Member on 19 April 1983 [Vol. 41, c.68] the committee noted that adequate steps appeared to be taken to minimise the exposure of workpeople during the manufacture of chrysoidine, that most concern seemed to be associated with its use by anglers and that this question of consumer, rather than occupational, health should be brought to the attention of the appropriate Government Departments. This has been done.
The Health and Safety Executive is not itself collecting data.
