HC Deb 06 May 1932 vol 265 cc1435-6W
Mr. PETHERICK

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can give the taxation per head in this country in a full year under the proposals contained in the Finance Bill; and the latest available figures of taxation in France, Germany, Italy, and the United States of America?

Major ELLIOT

The estimated taxation per head is as follows:

United Kingdom (1932–3) £15 18s.
United States (1931–2) $16.81*
France (1931–2) Frs.1176†
Germany (1931–2) Rms.143.45‡
Italy (1931–2) Lire 414
* Federal Taxation only. The increased taxes now under consideration by Congress would make the estimated taxation for 1932–3 $21.50 per head.
† Actual Receipts (including those for the Autonomous Sinking Fund) for the year ended 31st March, 1932. Gross receipts of monopolies are included.
‡ Federal Taxation only.
