HC Deb 06 May 1932 vol 265 c1436W
Dr. SALTER

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he will state what are the numbers of Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Nonconformist chaplains, respectively, in the Navy; what is the total sum paid in salaries to chaplains; and what are the highest and lowest salaries paid to senior and junior chaplains, respectively?

Lord STANLEY

The numbers are:

Anglican Chaplains 67
Roman Catholic Chaplains 10
Nonconformist Chaplains 9
86

The total sum paid in salaries to these officers amounts at present to £42,000 approximately. Exclusive of the Chaplain of the Fleet, who receives an inclusive salary of £l,335 per annum, the highest salary is £812 and the lowest £277 per annum. In addition to these salaries, chaplains, except the Chaplain of the Fleet, are accommodated and victualled at the expense of the Crown or receive appropriate allowances in lieu.
