HC Deb 24 September 1931 vol 256 c1827W
Mr. McSHANE

asked the President of the Board of Education whether, in exercising the powers proposed in the National Economy Bill with regard to terminating teachers' contracts, provision will be made for new contracts to be drawn up between them and the local authorities, and, the old contracts being terminated, for older teachers who desire to retire from the profession forthwith to do so without the usual statutory notice?

Sir D. MACLEAN

Provision will be made by Order-in-Council for the modification of the existing contracts of teachers in grant-aided schools, not for their termination or for the making of new contracts. The modified contracts will continue in force until terminated by either party or by mutual agreement in accordance with the ordinary law, and this will apply to a teacher who wishes to retire from the profession.
