HC Deb 15 May 1930 vol 238 cc2073-4W
Mr. DAGGAR

asked the Secretary for Mines if he is aware of the Price's appliance that would, if used, render safe the firing of shots in the mines; and, if so, what steps is it proposed to take in order to make its application compulsory?

Mr. TURNER

This appliance has been considered more than once by a committee of technical experts, and I am satisfied that its use would not make shot-firing appreciably safer, and that there is no justification for making the use of such an appliance compulsory.

Mr. DAGGAR

asked the Secretary for Mines if he is ware of an invention known as a safety detonator shield, and for which the claim is made that its use would prevent any strain or friction being placed upon the inner contents of the detonator, and which would make it perfectly safe to handle; and, if so, does he propose to render its use compulsory on all electric detonators?

Mr. TURNER

The device in question has been fully considered more than once by a committee of technical experts, and I am advised that there is no reason to think that its use would add appreciably to the factor of safety. The answer to the last part of the question is therefore in the negative.
