HC Deb 12 May 1930 vol 238 c1467W
Colonel HOWARD-BURY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he is aware that the rents of 60 ex-service men's houses built at Mullingar under the Soldiers' and Sailors' Trust are from four to five times as high as the council houses; and whether he will look into this matter and make representations so that the rents in ex-service men's houses should conform to the standard rents of the district?

Mr. LUNN

I am informed by the Irish Sailors' and Soldiers' Land Trust that, of the 59 trust cottages in the Mullingar district, 10 are let at a rent of 4s. per week and 49 at a rent of 4s. 6d. These rents cover the cost of maintenance and administration only and are, on an average, lower than the average rent of similar council cottages in the neighbour-hood.
