are given in the following table showing (1) the total declared value of the exports of United Kingdom produce and manufactures, registered as consigned to the countries mentioned, during each of the years 1913, 1925 and 1929, and (2) the proportion of such values to the total recorded value of imports for consumption into the several countries during the same years.

countries which have increased their tariffs since June, 1929; and the number and names of those which are actually considering such increases?

Mr. W. R. SMITH

Tariff increases, which may be regarded as of some general importance by reason of their nature or their scope, have come into force in the following countries since the date mentioned: Egypt, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Peru, Portugal and Turkey, as well as in Australia, Ceylon, British India and the Union of South Africa. In numerous other countries there have been increases of a minor character or of restricted scope. In a number of these cases the increases in some directions have been accompanied by decreases in others. As regards the second part of the question, a Bill is at present before the United States Congress for the revision of the United States tariff largely in an upward direction; and I understand that proposals for tariff increases are, at one stage or another, under consideration in Austria, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Sweden and Uruguay, as well as in the Union of South Africa and the Irish Free State.
