§ Major POLEasked the Secretary of State for India if he will state the number of cases of and deaths from plague in British India in each of the last five years; and whether any progress is being made in India in respect of the methods of effectively dealing with this scourge?
§ Mr. BENNI have no reliable figures of cases. Plague figures have shown on the whole a marked decline in recent years. Research work on prophylactic methods has yielded valuable results, but I am advised that there is not yet any reliable treatment for the disease. Progress depends largely on the willingness of the people to co-operate with the authorities in making fuller use of well-established measures, especially inoculation.
