HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 c1749W
Mr. REMER

asked the Lord Privy Seal how many schemes have been approved under the Colonial Development Act; what is the total capital sum guaranteed; and how many people it is calculated will be employed as a result?

Mr. LUNN

None of the schemes so far recommended by the Advisory Commit tee has as yet received formal approval, but the Treasury have intimated that they will be prepared to approve in principle the Zambesi Bridge project. The exact form which assistance from the Exchequer under the Palestine and East Africa Loans Act, 1926, and the Colonial Development Act, 1929, will take is still under consideration, but this does not involve any delay in the preliminary arrangements for starting work under the schemes which have already been put in hand. The scheme involves expenditure estimated at about £3,000,000, of which contracts placed in this country will represent over £1,000,000, affording employment estimated at the equivalent of some 60,000 man-months. Other recommendations of the Committee are under consideration in the Colonial Office.
