HC Deb 07 November 1929 vol 231 cc1275-6W
Mr. HANNON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can state the quantity of artificial silk yarn on which excise duty was paid during the three months ended 30th September, 1929, and, for comparison, during the three months ended 30th September, 1925?

Mr. SNOWDEN

The quantity of artificial silk yarn on which duty was actually paid during the three months ended 30th September, 1929, was approximately 14,082,160 pounds, and during the three months ended 30th September, 1925, was 4,288,316 pounds. The latter figure, however, only includes two months' payments, as the duty only came into force on 1st July, 1925, and the accounts for duty are made up monthly and paid after the end of the month.
