§ Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKSOn 22nd February, 1929, there were 7,639 taximeter (i.e. motor) cabs licensed in the Metropolitan police district, and this is the number available to ply for hire. The number actually plying cannot be given, as there is no record of those withdrawn owing to accident, illness of drivers, or any other cause.
